Who We Are

We are a neighborhood grocery, deli and diner + we care deeply about community, the local economy and providing our customers with a variety of healthy foods + wellness products.

We are committed to offering products that enhance wellness. In today’s world of over stimulation and confusing information, we’re here to help you discern what’s best for you and your family. And we are committed to educating ourselves and our customers on the most effective ways to make a difference in the health and healing of our planet.

We are committed to offering an environment of trust and friendliness. Our Market is a community ‘safe place’ where everyone feels welcome.

Through our commitment to local producers and growers, we keep dollars in our community and oil in the ground. We’re proud to showcase so many products that are sourced right here in western North Carolina.

Our pricing continues to improve, as we network with other independent natural food retailers (INFRA)! We work hard to find the right balance of fairness to our customers, generosity to our staff and community, and the health of our business.

We want you to feel uplifted when you leave our store!

This has, and will continue to be, our mission

Healthy Food

We’re proud to sell all organic produce, and to feed you primarily organic ingredients from our deli and diner.  We pay close attention to the ingredients in all our products.  You will not find artificial colors or flavorings, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, hormones, hydrogenated oils, trans-fats, MSG, or a host of other ingredients you might find in other markets.  In addition, all new products we bring into the Market are non-GMO.

We are attentive to the wide variety of dietary lifestyles that people are finding nurture their own health and well-being; vegan, vegetarian, meat-eaters, gluten-free, paleo… and more.  It’s an on-going discernment for us all, and we welcome your suggestions and requests.

Of course, regardless of the food ‘type’, the closer to home the product is made or grown, the easier it is to be sure it has the integrity we’re dedicated to.  That’s one reason we love local…

Local Love

West Village Market supports local businesses, local farms and local producers of all sorts!  We carry close to 200 local products in our store.  Innovative items from Asheville and the surrounding area are available in every department!

WHY LOCAL DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

  • Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers, which are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.

  • Local, one-of-a-kind businesses add distinctive character to a community!

  • Locally owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant ‘town centers’, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes.

  • Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.

  • Locally owned businesses recycle much of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.

  • Locally owned businesses create more jobs right here in our community.

Eco-friendly

The many issues surrounding food/product sourcing are a primary consideration for our buyers.  The environmental impact of those products, as well as the packaging is another major consideration.

We are committed to no GMO’s in our products – both on our shelves and in our food service.

We have eliminated plastic bags in our produce and bulk departments, replacing them with cellophane biodegradable bags or paper bags.  Though we are aware this is not a perfect solution it is our attempt to reduce plastic use and disposal.  We offer a wide variety of re-usable packaging options and encourage folks to bring their own containers, bags and cups.

It is an on-going discussion at the Market as to what is the best way to find solutions to the problem of plastic in our lifestyles and consequently in our environment.

Have ideas? Let us hear them!

How We Give Back

Here are a few ways we like to give back with our resources at the Market:

Sponsorship of a BeLoved Camp Clean Trash System

BeLoved launched a new project called #BeLovedCampClean which provides access to cleanup supplies, trash and recycling cans, and pickup to residents in our City who must camp because they do not have a home.

BeLoved Asheville works in collaboration with camp residents providing infrastructure, supplies, and support to care for their camp and the Earth. They will also work to help clean up former camps recycling camping gear and cleaning the area.

Contributions to BeLoved through sales of buttons, stickers, and T-shirts.

"BeLoved constantly is in the 'eye of the storm' providing for those in need and helping us to remember the humanity in all."

Our Bi-monthly Terracycle Program

We keep an active Terracycle program going on a quarterly basis. We encourage you all to save your hard-to-recycle packaging such as:

  • Tooth “waste” (empty tubes, floss containers, brushes, etc.)
  • Food/baby food pouches
  • Bar wrappers
  • Snack bags
  • Empty body care containers (i.e. shampoos, lotions, etc.)
  • Supplement packaging like blister packs + prescription bottles

We send out a notice via social media when its coming up. Then we pack it all and send it off to Terracycle waste recyclers!

Check out their website HERE.

We're not done yet!

We're also happy to…

  • Give $100 monthly in product contribution to the unhoused and/or food-insecure community via food boxes and BeLoved food pantry

  • Contribute to FEAST/Bountiful Cities through sales of t-shirts and plant starts (FEAST Asheville promotes healthy eating choices and makes them accessible to people of all income levels through hands on cooking and garden education that encourage and empower participants by teaching skills needed to make wholesome and tasty food!)

  • Make monthly contribution to 4Oceans, to end the ocean plastic crisis (keep an eye out for our raffles because we give away the bracelets we earn through our subscription!)
  • Are members of the Biodynamic Association, to support their efforts to “awaken and enliven co-creative relationships between humans and the earth, transforming the practice and culture of agriculture to renew the vitality of the earth, the integrity of our food, and the health and wholeness of our communities.”
  • Are a dropoff point for Asheville Survival Network donations
